Note: The following information applies only to Flow Learning content. Thanks for your patience as we continue to enhance accessibility across our other Mapal products.
Overview: Flow Learning is dedicated to ensuring that our digital learning content is accessible to all users, regardless of their abilities. This article provides insights into our accessibility features and answers common questions about how we support diverse learning needs.
Accessibility in Flow Learning
Flow Learning is committed to making digital learning accessible to all users, regardless of their abilities or learning needs. Our courses and resources are designed in alignment with the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG 2.1), ensuring they are:
- Perceivable – Content is structured so all learners can access it, regardless of sensory impairments.
- Operable – Navigation is intuitive and compatible with assistive technologies.
- Understandable – We use clear, simple language to ensure content is easy to follow.
- Robust – Our courses work across various platforms, devices, and screen reader technologies.
Flow Learning also complies with Section 508 and is currently enhancing its modules to align with the European Accessibility Act (effective June 2025). This includes improved colour contrast, better screen reader compatibility, and enhanced considerations for learners with epilepsy.
Neurodiversity and Learning Needs
Neurodiversity encompasses a broad range of learning differences, and Flow Learning is committed to making our content easier to comprehend for all learners. We achieve this by:
- Using accessibility technology to support different learning needs.
- Tailoring content to a 7th-grade reading level to ensure clarity and readability.
- Avoiding jargon and overly complex sentences, making information easier to process—especially for learners who use English as a second language.
We also prioritise learner control by keeping all sections open and allowing full video playback control (play, pause, subtitles, full screen, etc.), so learners can absorb information at their own pace.
Additionally, we test our colour schemes and fonts to ensure suitability for individuals with colour blindness and dyslexia, while also designing content to prevent triggers for seizures or physical reactions.
Key Accessibility Features
- Screen Reader Compatibility: Our modules work with industry-leading screen reader technology.
- Subtitles & Captions: All video content includes subtitles or captions for hearing-impaired learners or those who prefer visual reinforcement.
- Accessible Design: Fonts and colours are tested for dyslexic learners and those with colour blindness, ensuring no visual barriers.
- User Control: Learners have complete control over video playback, including play, pause, subtitles, and fullscreen mode.
- Alt Text & ARIA Labelling: Interactive elements and images include descriptions for screen readers, enhancing accessibility.
FAQs
Are Flow Learning courses accessible? Do you cater to dyslexia, colour blindness, hearing, or visual impairments?
Yes, all Flow Learning modules are designed with accessibility in mind. The authoring tool that is used is uniquely designed to work with a variety of screen reader technology, to allow for the content to be read out to those who are sight-impaired or require support with reading (such as those with Dyslexia). We also test fonts and colours for dyslexic learners and individuals with colour blindness, eliminating visual barriers.
If learners require screen reader support, we recommend the following free tools:
- Apple OS – Built-in accessibility technology
- Windows – Built-in screen reader
- Android – TalkBack screen reader
- NVDA – Open-source screen reader for PCs
- ChromeVox – Google Chrome extension
Can voiceover be added to Flow Learning content built in Evolve?
No, Evolve does not currently support built-in voiceover functionality. However, it is fully WCAG 2.1/Section 508 compliant and designed to work seamlessly with screen readers, eliminating the need for additional voiceover support.
For more details on how we ensure accessibility, refer to our Key Accessibility Features section above. If you’d like guidance on creating accessible content, you can access Evolve’s Accessibility Guide or contact our support team.
What support is available for learners with Down Syndrome?
Flow Learning courses are designed to accommodate a variety of learning needs, but specific requirements can vary. Based on our research, we suggest the following modifications to enhance accessibility for learners with Down Syndrome:
- Breaking courses into smaller sections: We have worked with customers to restructure longer courses into shorter, digestible modules with assessments placed at the end.
- Adding hands-on activities: Interactive exercises between learning segments help reinforce concepts and encourage immediate application.
- Providing additional support: Some learners benefit from learning in small groups with a facilitator or having a learning buddy available to answer questions.
- Encouraging real-world application: Learners often retain information better through immediate hands-on practice, ideally with a mentor or supervisor guiding them.
- Catering for visual and auditory impairments: Our courses are designed with these accessibility needs in mind. See our Key Accessibility Features section above for assistive technology recommendations.
Need More Support?
While we strive to make our courses as inclusive as possible, we understand that learning needs vary between individuals. If a customer requires specific adjustments—such as colour overlays or custom typefaces—we offer adaptation and branding options for all our core resources.
