Overview: Evolve allows training managers to gamify modules using the Achievements extension so that learners stay motivated through rewards and milestones.
Start from: a course on the Evolve platform.
Introduction to Achievements
Achievements allow you to lightly gamify a module for the user by adding Points, Stars, Lives, and Badges.
You can link various components to the extensions which could, for example, let the user build Points tallies or attempt to navigate their way through the module without losing all their Lives. When completed successfully, you can upload Badges as a reward for the user completing the module successfully. While this does not equate to any formal certification or qualification, it acts as a point and reward system existent solely within the module.
Notes: All the edits to Achievements will be located within the extension itself. You will not need to go into the build view of the module to add any of the elements set out below.
Configure Achievements
- Navigate to Extensions (the puzzle piece icon) on the vertical, left-hand toolbar.
- Select Achievements under Available Extensions.
Points & Stars
When using the Achievements extension, you only have the option of adding either Points or Stars.
- Select the Point or Stars tab at the top of the page and toggle Enable Points/Stars (depending on your preference).
- Points can be used for any type of interactive component.
Notes: You can select how many points are required for each component that is interacted with. This is important, as when you need to create the badge awarded at the end, you need to set a certain number of points that are required to attain it.
- Stars can only be used for question-based components.
Once you have enabled one of these options, you can then select which components you would like to link to these methods at the Points-enabled Components or Star-enabled Components dropdowns, located at the bottom of the configuration pages.
Lives
Adding Lives is a little simpler. When a user gets a question incorrect, they will lose one life.
- Select the Lives tab at the top of the page and toggle Enable Lives.
- Select the Total Lives a user is granted from the start.
- Select if participants will have the option to Reset Course if they lose all of their lives.
Notes: We would always recommend allowing the option to Reset Course, as you wouldn’t want this to interfere with the possibility of not allowing the user to attain completion.
Badges & Badges Items
Badges operate in a similar way to Lives.
- Select the Badges tab at the top of the page.
- Toggle Enable Badges.
- Edit the text for the Badge Label and Badge notify title.
- Select the Badge Items tab at the top of the page.
- Select Add Badge Item.
- Select the specific Badge Item.
- Assign a Title, Description, Image, and Completion requirements (Points or Stars required).
Additional Info
Once the Badge is attained, users will navigate to a separate page where the Badge is displayed. To edit this page:
- Select the General tab at the top of the page.
- Assign a Title and a Description to the Achievement page.
- Then, navigate to the Hero Image tab.
- Assign a Hero Image and its associated attributes that will be visible to the user when the achievement is earned.
